Mr. Louv was almost certainly thinking more broadly than just conservation, but when I read this quote the first time, I read it through a conservation lens. There are many ways to be engaged in conservation, of course. Some of them include directly working with land: acquisition, stewardship, science, restoration, and so on. Some ways to be engaged include giving money or time. Donor and volunteer are engaged in conservation work.

I sincerely hope that you see your own work as engagement as well. The future of conservation belongs to citizens who are passionate, knowledgeable, and engaged. And that includes you.

Thank you for being passionate.

Thank you for being knowledgeable.

And thank you for being engaged in the important work of conservation.
