Take a Hike!

In fundraising for land conservation, we often say that “the land sells itself.” By this we simply mean that if you can get a potential donor out on the land to see, smell, touch – feel – for themselves, often that’s all you need. This isn’t just so much theoretical hogwash. It actually works.     Fundraiser’s Almanac: July Fall Appeal Planning Board Screening of Foundation Officers Taking Stock Direct Mail – Mailhouse Fundraiser’s Almanac: August Take a Hike! Direct Mail – Mailhouse

Earlier this month, I encouraged taking out the fall appeal letters you started back in February and starting to get them in shape for a September drop date. (See Fall Appeal Planning.)  I encouraged planning to drop the first appeal letter the last week in September and even printing them all NOW – in July. “Print the letters with September date, fold and stuff them, seal them, and put stamps on. See you at Rally!

Next week is Rally week. Rally, the National Land Conservation Conference, is in Providence, Rhode Island this year. I am looking forward to spending most of next week in the east. This year will be first year in some time that I will not be presenting my Fundraising that Matters workshop. Instead, my colleague and good friend Anita O’Gara and I will team up to present The Surprising Secrets of Direct Mail Success on Friday. Anita is a mail marketing wizard who has built a membership for Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation that now numbers more than 6,000. We’ll touch on membership systems and...

AHA Moments from the 2011 Land Trust Alliance Rally

David, I thoroughly enjoyed your seminar at the recent Rally and wanted to share with you an “AHA” moment that I have had since returning from Milwaukee. Using our database, which serves as the basis of our fundraising program recordkeeping, I identified our top 150 donors and created a three ring binder with printouts of the basic record information for each donor – name/address/record of donations. This is now prominently on my desk as a reminder of where my executive director and I need to focus our efforts. I make notes on each sheet as I am in contact with the donor in...
