Meet some of our clients, from Wisconsin to Texas and beyond.

Talcott Free Library Logo - croppedTalcott Free Library – The Talcott Free Library was dedicated in 1889 when Wait Talcott gave the building to the Rockton Township and the township voted to approve a tax to support it. The library has served the community of Rockton, Illinois ever since. Several years ago, a library patron left $500,000 to the library as a bequest to be used for additional building expansion, and additional space would be welcomed to accommodate growing and changing needs of teens and young adults. However, if the library does add space, it will also need to upgrade the building safety systems to comply with changing building codes in Rockton. To further explore the feasibility of such an undertaking, and to help prepare TFL for success, the Board of Directors hired Development for Conservation to conduct a Capital Campaign Feasibility Study.

Aldo Leopold Nature Center Logo

Aldo Leopold Nature Center – In late 2015, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center in Monona, Wisconsin hired Development for Conservation to conduct a Development Audit. The recommendations, if implemented would represent substantial cultural change of the Nature Center from transaction-based fundraising to philanthropy. To assist with their Implementation, ALNC has engaged D4C to work with both staff and board members throughout 2016.

Discovery_Center_logoNorth Lakeland Discovery Center – North Lakeland Discovery Center can be described as a nature-based education and community center. The Discovery Center’s primary market is regional, appealing to people who live, own second homes, and vacation in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. The Center’s mission is to enrich lives and inspire an ethic of care for Wisconsin’s Northwoods through the facilitation of connections among nature, people, and community. In 2012, NLDC completed and approved a Master Plan for improvements to the Center’s campus, buildings, and programming. The estimated cost of implementation is $5.0 million, and the Discovery Center hired Development for Conservation to conduct a Capital Campaign Feasibility Study.

Pennsylvania Land Trusts Association – Pennsylvania Land Trust Association is the state service center for land trusts in Pennsylvania. PALTA hired Development for Conservation to complete a research and planning project for an effort to invest in Membership Development across several land trust organizations in Pennsylvania. The initial phase of the project will ask and probe the question, “Can a group of land trust organizations with similar missions and geographically distinct service territories productively pool efforts to attract new members and donors?” The eventual goal of the program would be to take the current levels of support across the separate organizations and multiply that support by some increment within a given number of months or years. The initial vision is doubling the aggregate membership (both numbers of members and amount of unrestricted support) within three years, but the research performed in this initial project may result in modifying that vision, the length of time, or both.

Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy – Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy in Middleton, Wisconsin, has hired Development for Conservation to Facilitate a One-Day Planning Retreat for its Board of Directors. The retreat will be used to review progress toward Strategic Planning goals established several years ago and propose extensions of those goal statements.

Connecticut Farmland Trust – Connecticut Farmland Trust is a statewide land trust based in Hartford, Connecticut. In 2014, CFT hired Conservation Consulting Group to conduct a comprehensive Organizational Needs Assessment. One of the issues the assessment revealed related to significant problems with its approach to fundraising and donor development. CFT has since extended this engagement to include specific assistance with Development Planning and Membership Retention.

HVA - smallerHousatonic Valley Association – Housatonic Valley Association protects land and water throughout the Housatonic Watershed in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. Protecting land protects water quality and river health. HVA works in partnership with river and land conservation organizations to protect the natural character and environmental health of the entire Housatonic River Watershed. HVA is now extended that engagement to include specific assistance with Membership Retention and Recruitment.

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful –  January 2015. In 2014, this Rockford Illinois-basknibed recycling center group hired  me to conduct a half-day fundraising seminar for their board and staff.  This year, I’ll be returning to do a refresher course, as well as work with some specific issues related to fundraising for their new recycling center off of Hydraulic Road in Rockford.

Rreachoutockford Reachout – January 2015. This Rockford Illinois-based jail ministry is raising about half the money it needs tobring hope, help, and the gospel of Jesus Christ to more than 2,000  inmates, ex-offenders, and their families. I will be working with the board and staff to develop and implement a plan for outreach into the faith community and into the community at large for help bridging that gap.

McKenzie River Trust – January 2015. In 2013, I worked with McKenzie River Trust on aMRT development audit and screening exercise, and used the results to propose a set of prioritized strategic objectives for board and staff involvement. I returned to Eugene Oregon in 2014 to draft a more specific marketing and membership plan to covert MRT’s current donor system into a membership system and work to recruit new members. The eventual goal is for MRT to have 1,000 individual contributors each year. This year begins the implementation. We’ll start with a renewal protocol and focus saturation mail and direct mail into select communities where there is already significant support. The work will be done on teh ground by Jules Abbott. My role will be in coaching.

The Land Conservancy of McHenry County – January 2013. The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is a small, strong organization well-positioned to protect remaining prairie and oak savanna remnants as well as stream corridors, bogs, and fens in McHenry County, Illinois. McHenry County is at the center of conservation planning efforts initiated by other organizations and resource agencies, and a number of conservation interests and opportunities are converging. TLC may be the best organization to leverage interest and resources into conservation on the ground. To take full advantage of these opportunities and to more fully leverage the momentum initiated by others, TLC needs to grow both in terms of total numbers of supporters and in terms of funds raised. TLC hired me to conduct a development audit, formalize and implement a fresh plan for fundraising, and provide board level major gifts training. I am now working with the Executive Director as an implementation coach.

BRC LogoBayfield Regional Conservancy – November 2012. Peter McKeever and I  completed a Guided Organizational Assessment for Bayfield Regional Conservancy a few years ago, and I worked with the BRC to prepare a Development Plan shortly thereafter. They are now accredited, Yea!) More recently, BRC hired me to help maintain fundraising momentum while they complete their search for an Executive Director and to mentor the Interim ED. I now serve in a coaching role.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois offers a Carroll Starr grant challenge where organizational funds raised by a non-profit organization and used to establish an endowment with the community foundation are matched. When grants are awarded (usually 3-4 each year), major gift fundraising training is offered with the grant. I have provided this training for many groups in the Rockford Illinois over the past several years including for Natural Land Institute, Discovery Museum, and Klehm Arboretum.

ice age trail alliance - site-logo-101x123Ice Age Trail Alliance – September 2011. Ice Age Trail Alliance is the administrative organization focused on building the 1,000-mile footpath across Wisconsin known as the Ice Age Scenic Trail. The Alliance hired The BAM Team to assess the organization preparatory to accreditation and to facilitate its strategic planning process. More recently, they have hired me to complete a development audit and guide the implementation of some of its key recommendations. We conducted a training session for the board, created a $1,000 giving club, and laid the groundwork for a five-year effort to secure $1 million in stewardship endowment funding.

pgclc-logo2Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation – February 2015. Land Trust Alliance helped create the Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation in 2010 and has served a primary funder and convener since then. The Alliance asked me to facilitate an initial conversation with the Executive Committee to help that group work through a transition to self-governance.

Photo Midwest – February 2015. Formerly known Photo Midwest Logoas the Center for Photography in Madison, Photo Midwest offers photography courses, interest groups, lectures & programming, and exhibits to help Wisconsin photographers push their skills and understanding of photography to the next level. As an all-volunteer group, however, PhotoMidwest has reached the practical limit of what it can do without staff. In February, the group asked me to help with a transition, beginning with a plan and including considerations for funding, HR policies, job descriptions, and so on.

San Isabel logo

San Isabel Land Protection Trust – December 2014. San Isabel Land Preservation Trust is a Colorado land trust based in Westcliffe, Colorado and serving four southern Colorado counties.
